Principal’s Message

As principal of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School North Strathfield (OLA), I am delighted to be able to share our website with you. We welcomed our first students in 2015. We are now a Kindergarten to Year 6 school, delivering personalised learning to challenge and meet the needs and interests of all students..

OLA North Strathfield is a Catholic primary school, situated within the system of Sydney Catholic Schools. OLA is staffed by highly skilled, enthusiastic teachers and support staff. They are committed to excellence and providing teaching and learning that allows for every student to be the best they can be.

As educators, we acknowledge that we share the responsibility of education with parents. Learning is a partnership and we warmly welcome your participation and support. We aim to grow our students into strong young people – firm in their faith and confident and collaborative in their learning, where words and actions make a positive impact in the world.

Our school policies and procedures, our approach to pastoral care and the way that we relate to each other as members of a learning community reflect the Catholic values we hold. We are blessed to be supported by our parish administrator, Father Michael Lanzon and by our local parish community. Our school is a place of learning, of prayer, and a space that is happy and safe.

I invite you to join us on this wonderful journey as we continue to grow this unique Catholic learning community here at OLA, North Strathfield.

Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School Strathfield HistoryOur History
The parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Homebush was founded in 1953, after a previous attempt to set up the parish in 1932 had been unsuccessful. In August 1953, Monsignor Kerr from St Dominic’s Church, Flemington, proposed the establishment of a parish church/school in Homebush and on January 6, 1954, a contract to build such a Church was signed by Rev Monsignor Kerr and John Finlay. The church was completed that same year and was blessed and opened by Cardinal Norman Gilroy on October 10, 1954.

In 2004, after some renovations to the interior and exterior of the church, His Eminence, Cardinal George Pell, consecrated the church and the altar on the day of the church’s Golden Jubilee.

Fr Mikhail Angel was the parish priest at the time of initial planning, start-up and commencement of OLA. He was present on the day of the Opening and Blessing, along with Archbishop Anthony Fisher, Dr Dan White – Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, Dr Michael Krawec – Regional Director and Mrs Sybil Dickens – Regional Consultant. Fr Mikhail has since retired and today, Father Michael Lanzon is the current parish administrator. Fr Michael is a part of our distinctive 21st century school that fosters dynamic and future-focused learning, guided by the teachings of the Gospel.

Our Charism
When we speak of charism, we are referring to the special gifts that the Spirit grants to our school community and defines our specific vocation for our service of others.

For our community at OLA this is Our Lady, Mary Mother of God. Mary is held up as an example to us for the way in which she heard and fully accepted the Word of God, and acted upon it.

From the time of the Annunciation until the day that she stood at the foot of the cross, Mary is the perfect follower of Jesus.    (Lumen Gentium, #57)

By understanding Mary’s exemplary qualities, we can determine the essential features that should characterise the members of our community of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School. Through Mary, Jesus is known and loved.
